"Santa Clara Valley Medical Center saved my life, and I know I'm going to walk again."
That's how George Liu puts it, reflecting on his motorcycle accident that changed everything for him in a split-second. For George, and thousands of others in Silicon Valley every year, the top-level trauma care at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (VMC) is supported by more than just the finest doctors and nurses. VMC provides state-of-the-art spinal cord and brain injury treatment, one of California's few Burn Centers, and a clinic system for children and adults throughout Santa Clara County.
Indeed, all these services are a lifeline for everyone in our community but they are also the Safety Net: VMC is the only medical center in Santa Clara County with a 100% "open door" policy, welcoming everyone, regardless of ability to pay.
That's the problem. As health care costs go up and the number of families without health insurance continues to rise, public funds are going down. While Santa Clara County's budget cuts exceeded $100 million over the past three years, the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center has seen its patient population increase by 40%. 1 in 4 Santa Clara County residents now utilize the services of VMC.
Enter the VMC Foundation, which since 1988 has worked to raise funds and awareness for the entire Santa Clara Valley Health & Hospital System. Supporting programs where traditional "county resources" fall short, the VMC Foundation is meeting our community's growing health care crisis head-on.
Major budget shortfalls have the VMC Foundation seeking more generous supporters who understand the truth: If Valley Medical Center disappeared, the results for our region would be catastrophic. VMC isn't just the busiest hospital in Silicon Valley, it's also our center of disaster and mass-casualty response. Statistics show that, sooner or later, we'll ALL need VMC and thus, we all have a role to play in ensuring it keeps pace with the growing demand.
